SIKESTON, Mo. -- About 600 Southeast Missouri farmers jam the Sikeston Armory to register their support for newly appointed Soil Conservation Service Director Peter C. Myers of Matthews, Mo., and the man who appointed him, Secretary of Agriculture John Block.

50 years ago: March 27, 1957

State College will offer the first graduate work in its 84-year history this summer under a cooperative arrangement with the University of Missouri; teachers in Southeast Missouri will be offered graduate work in elementary education and secondary education.

The Cape Girardeau County Welfare Office plans to move Friday to new quarters on the ground floor of the American Legion building, 811 Broadway, in Cape Girardeau; for several years, the office has been on the second floor of the Finney building, 711a Broadway.

75 years ago: March 27, 1932

Climaxing a series of city-wide programs during Holy Week, Cape Girardeau observes Easter Sunday with appropriate services; they include individual church programs and an Easter sunrise service sponsored by the Christian Endeavor Union at Houck Field Stadium.

Because of rain and cold weather, hundreds of Cape Girardeau youngsters are disappointed when the Lions Club's annual Easter egg hunt at Sunset Terrace is postponed.

100 years ago: March 27, 1907

It has remained for the women of the Wednesday Club to take action in carrying out a project for the betterment of Cape Girardeau; they have decided that the city needs a good scouring; they have set April 10, 11 and 12 for the cleanup.

Advance, Mo., has a conflagration in the evening that destroys the leading industry there; the big poultry house of Goodwin & Jean catches fire and is destroyed before the people of the town can save it; there are 300 cases of eggs, besides an enormous lot of hides and other things, in the house; all are saved, except two barrels of hides.
