ADVANCE, Mo. — Senior Carl Ritter scored 817 points in 28 games for a game average of 29.2 points, to lead the Advance High Hornets in scoring for the 1957-1958 basketball season; the Hornets won 20 games and lost eight during the season.
Reservations have been made by nearly 300 Kiwanians from five states to attend a reception and banquet honoring Kiwanis International president H. Park Arnold, to be held Friday night at Memorial Hall under sponsorship of the Cape Girardeau Kiwanis Club.
75 years ago: March 26, 1933
Mrs. Anna Carroll, a pioneer resident of Cape Girardeau and one of the oldest members of St. Vincent's Catholic Church, died last night at the family home, 312 Independence St.; Carroll, 78, was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Nolan; her husband, P.T. Carroll, preceded her in death.
Workers excavating for the footings of the new Montgomery Ward & Co. store building on Main Street have encountered a stone wall, about 20 feet east of the east side of Main Street and about 10 feet underground.
100 years ago: March 26, 1908
Jackson will soon organize a fire department; a fire hose and a truck have already been bought, and they are tested on the street in front of the courthouse today; the first gush of water strikes two teams of horses belonging to Charles Oliver, which are hitched to a wagon; the horses break loose and run a mile out of town before being caught.
With a membership of 19 charter members, a Rebecah Lodge was instituted last night at the Masonic Hall; Mrs. Ivy M. Grissom was chosen to head the group.
