"Dan" Niswonger grappled with would-be jumper on Mississippi River bridge yesterday afternoon, holding 19-year-old Cape Girardeau woman until two other police officers assisted him in hauling her to safety on deck of bridge; officers' heroics ended two and half-hour struggle to coax disturbed woman from narrow steel walkway, 85 feet above river.

50 years ago: March 26, 1952

City Public Works Department employees and dragline were put to work yesterday repairing major sewer break behind Marquette Oil Co., 16 S. Frederick, and immediately adjacent to Missouri Pacific freight yards; sanitary sewer runs north and south from Middle and Independence across freight yard.

Crew of drill operators is making soundings and taking soil samples up and down riverfront as part of engineering work preparatory to drafting of detailed plans for Main Street levee; borings have been made at Missouri Utilities plant, at sand company, Sinclair office and Frisco passenger station; bed rock has been found at depths from six to 46 feet.

75 years ago: March 26, 1927

City council is expected to postpone installation of $125,000 storm water sewer system in central part of Cape Girardeau because of overwhelming opposition to improvement by property owners in that section; council, City Councilor Rush H. Limbaugh and City Engineer Ed. Sailer have been in session behind closed doors entire morning discussing matter.

Dean R.S. Douglass, at special farewell meeting of Baptists Wednesday night at their old church building, gave principal address, telling history of First Baptist Church, and of Old Bethel Baptist Church, mother church of local congregation.
