For the first time in a number of years, Cape Girardeau motorists are filling up their gasoline tanks for under 70 cents a gallon; falling oil prices have meant a savings boon at local service stations.

50 years ago: March 25, 1961

Major winners in the fifth annual Southeast Missouri Regional Science Fair were named last night; they are Tommy LaTurno and Terry Karlish of Kennett, Michael Gibbar of Perryville, Stuart Landrum of Farmington, Bill Wilkinson of Sikeston, Larry Tidd of Jackson, Wayne Womack of Doniphan, John Rigdon of Chaffee, and Ray Keller of Cape Girardeau.

Building permits issued in the office of the Cape Girardeau city engineer rose to $102,150 this week; a permit was issued for a service station to cost $20,000 and a temporary roller rink estimated at $1,000; remodeling at the former Broadway Fruit Market will cost $25,000.

75 years ago: March 25, 1936

Going to the polls yesterday, Girardeans selected Mayor Edward L. Drum and County Judge Charles G. Wilson as the nominees for mayor and picked six candidates for three commissioner posts; nominated for commissioner were H.L. Coffman, Frank Batchelor and Paul R. Brooks, the incumbents, and L.H. Butler, Phillip H. Steck and Louis Wittmor.

Sen. R.L. Dearmont of Cape Girardeau has been appointed chief legal counsel for the trustee of the Missouri Pacific Railroad; the railroad is in receivership and is being operated by the trustee under orders of the federal court at St. Louis.

100 years ago: March 25, 1911

Information has been received here that the naval reserves of St. Louis will leave that city next Tuesday for Memphis to bring the U.S. monitor Amphitrite upriver; on their return home, the reserves plan to stop at Cape Girardeau about half a day.

G.C. Whaley, mechanical and mining engineer for the St. Joe Lead Co. at Herculaneum, Mo., is in the city visiting relatives, Mr. and Mrs. I.R. Kelso; he attended the minstrel show at the Normal School last night.
