25 years ago: March 25, 1985

Cape Girardeau City Councilman Donald Strohmeyer and Charles M. Vehlow Jr., director of the Saint Francis Mental Health Center, cut the ribbon yesterday at the dedication of the center's new outpatient facility at 24 S. Mount Auburn Rd.; the 8,800-square-foot structure was designed by Cape Girardeau architect Thomas E. Phillips.

Peggy Jackson, an employee of the Children's Department of the Cape Girardeau Public Library, has been named "Employee of the Year by the library board of trustees and the Friends of the Library; she has been associated with the library since 1976.

50 years ago: March 25, 1960

Choral and instrumental groups from high schools throughout Southeast Missouri -- more than 1,000 pupils -- are on the State College campus to compete for ratings and the opportunity to join state competition in Columbia, Mo., next month.

Allusions to Matt Dillon and the Wild West are frequent -- and humorous -- as members of St. Mary's Cathedral Parish and other friends pay a farewell tribute to Bishop Marion F. Forst, who departs next week to take charge of the Dodge City, Kan., Diocese; Forst had been pastor of the local parish 10 years.

75 years ago: March 25, 1935

Fifteen Cape Girardeau County youths will go to Civilian Conservation Camp No. 726 near Greenville, Mo., on April 1; those going from Cape Girardeau are Olin Welty, Roy Knapp, James Randol, Robert Stout, James Powell, Franklin Jones, Paul Adams and Denzil McGraw; the others are Ralph Tripp, Elmer Biri, Herbert Soehlig, Woodrow Crader, Cleveland Mobley, Herbert Devore and Hurst Morton.

Management of the cafe at the Airline Oil Co. station on U.S. 61 has been taken over by Harry and Porter K. Stubbs of Cape Girardeau; Lonnie Hill formerly operated the establishment.

100 years ago: March 25, 1910

The Cape Girardeau City Council yesterday took up the matter of paving Broadway near the new Federal Building; it was decided the city would pay for the improvement and bill the treasurer of the United States afterward.

Edward F. Regenhardt goes to work in the morning as supervisor of street paving for the city of Cape Girardeau.
