Cape Girardeau Florsheim plant is expected to add some new workers following announcement that West Plains, Mo., Florsheim plant will close; 100 new workers will be added at Cape Girardeau and Kirksville, Mo., facilities.

Astronaut Linda Godwin, native of Oak Ridge, Mo., is scheduled to make her second space flight aboard shuttle Endeavour on April 7; number of local dignitaries, including Southeast Missouri State University officials, have been invited to witness launch from Cape Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

25 years ago: March 25, 1979

Groundwork that could lead to conversion of present city library building to museum and visitors center is being undertaken by board of directors of Southeast Missouri Museum Inc.; library will move out of building in Common Pleas Courthouse Park when new facility is completed.

Groundbreaking ceremony is held for new Cape Girardeau Public Library, which is to be construction on site on North Clark Street; facility is expected to be completed in spring of 1980.

50 years ago: March 25, 1954

Hundreds of high school pupils from all over Southeast Missouri brave rain in morning to take part in district music competition festival, first of spring series of high school scholastic and athletic events to be held on campus of State College.

Plan for financing Rodney Vista-Cape Rock Drive sanitary sewers was presented to city council yesterday by representatives of bonding firm working out proposal for installation of sewer system in growing areas; they recommended issuance of general obligation assessment bonds.

75 years ago: March 25, 1929

More than half of $50,000 capital stock of proposed Southeast Missouri Intermediate Credit Bank should be subscribed before nightfall; reports from lower counties of district show satisfactory progress is being made.

Rubbish accumulating during winter is being piled in front of residences to be picked up by city street department motor trucks when they begin making rounds of city tomorrow in annual cleanup.
