A lawsuit over the 1984 fatal shooting of Rickie Dean Burton, 29, by a Cape Girardeau reserve police officer has been settled out of court, with the plaintiffs to receive $35,000.

Workers used a crane yesterday to erect a 130-foot microwave tower at New Life World Outreach Center for a low-power Christian television station that will carry the Trinity Broadcast Network.

Mayor Walter H. Ford and challenger W.E. "Waddy" Davis finish in tight one-two order in the primary election, while Harry A. Siemers outdistances the field of 20 for commissioner; also advancing in the commissioner's race are John A. Hayden, Al Nenninger, J.W. McBride, J.L. Wieser, Dewey Hinton, Max G. Stovall and Edgar P. Bock.

One hundred and seventy-five boosters attend the annual basketball banquet sponsored by the Jackson High School Benchwarmers in the school cafeteria, honoring the 1934 Missouri high school basketball champs and the 1964 squad; head table honorees of 1934 include Hubert Seabaugh, Howard Kiehne, Wilson "Moon" Godwin and Elwood Godwin.

1939

Hal Lynch, architect in charge of the community center and fairground project, says he hopes the Rotarians will arrange to have their banquet in the building May 8.

At his home two miles north of Crump or Crossroads, which he began to carve out of the wilderness 65 years ago and where he has lived since that time, Eli J. Nations dies in the morning; he was born in Perry County in 1852; in 1872 he came to this county, married Carolina Allen and established his home near Crump; after the death of his first wife, he married Cora C. Allen.

1914

Manager R.L. Lesem of the Riverview Hotel has opened a cafe to be run in connection with the large rooming house; Lesem has remodeled the dining room, installed a lunch counter on the north side of the room and put in some fine new fixtures.

J.S. Burdge, representing the Bituminous Paving Co. of St. Louis, recently closed a contract with Edward Hely for crushed stone to be used in the top dressing of streets in St. Louis and other towns; the company has concluded Cape Girardeau's crushed limestone makes the best paving material.
