1989

Jerry Presley, director of the Missouri Department of Conservation, and members of the Cape Girardeau County Commission announce plans to construct a nature center/regional headquarters for the department in Cape County North Park, on land leased from the county.

Students set up exhibits in the morning for the annual Southeast Missouri Regional Science Fair, which is being held at the Show Me Center through Thursday.

1964

Taking honors at the eighth annual Southeast Missouri Regional Science Fair yesterday were Jim L. Stone of Central High School, and Jim Watson, an exhibitor from Sikeston High School, winners of the trip to the National Science Fair-International in Baltimore, Md., May 6 through 9; the Navy Science Cruiser award was won by Kirby Joe Keller of Campus High.

L.W. "Bill" McDowell becomes the fourth candidate for the Cape Girardeau School Board; he is a construction inspector for the city of Cape Girardeau.

1939

A crowd of several hundred people blocks Main Street traffic in the afternoon as Robert Wadlow, the Alton, Ill., boy giant and world's tallest man, makes a personal appearance at the Gaylor Shoe Store; at 8-foot, 8 1/4-inches, Wadlow dwarfs his father, who appears here with him, gazing at the crowd made up mostly of youngsters from the bed of a truck.

Jess Millikan of the Lesem-Millikan garage, Plymouth, De Soto and Studebaker agency, announces the agency is moving from 200 North Main St., to 43 S. Main St., in the building formerly occupied by the walkathon.

1914

S.A Ayers and Curtis Lee of Lutesville, Mo., were severely injured last night when a motor speeder upon which they were riding collided with a flat car on the Iron Mountain tracks at Dutchtown; the men had been to Jackson on a business trip and left there shortly before midnight on their way home.

The steamer Cape Girardeau arrives here in the afternoon on its initial trip of the season and is welcomed by one of the largest crowds that has been on the levee for a long time; the grand old boat is painted from top to bottom and looks brand new.
