New security measures have been instituted at the Cape Girardeau County Jail in Jackson over the past month in response to an outbreak of inmate violence which resulted in three prisoners suffering moderate injuries; the fights, which occurred in late January, were previously unreported to the media.

Negotiations have been finalized for the purchase of the Howard Johnson Motor Lodge here by Himet Shah and his brother, Dr. Madia Shah, of the St. Louis area from Paul Tucker and associates, doing business as Cape Investors.

50 years ago: March 2, 1960

A premature snow, arriving some 12 hours ahead of forecasts, dumps 3 3/4 inches of the white stuff on Cape Girardeau up to 10 this morning, bringing the amount in the last week to 12 1/4 inches, more than had fallen previously all winter; the snow continues to fall in the afternoon.

In response to numerous calls, Police Commissioner John L. Wiesner announces the police department will rope off a section of North Pacific Street this evening for sledding.

Mac Hunter is named Federal Emergency Relief Administration relief director in the county, heading the staff headquartered in the chamber of commerce building.

After getting good service out of his automobile for 21 years, Charles Welter of Ancell has sold it to Lander Drury of Kelso, Mo., who plans still further use of the ancient vehicle; the car, a Model T Ford, was purchased in 1914 by Welter.

100 years ago: March 2, 1910

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- The bricklayers who are working on the large building being erected by the Essner Bros. of Rockview, Mo., resumed their duties yesterday, as the weather was quite favorable; when completed, this building will help Chaffee's looks very much.

The Peoples Bank, having recently purchased the Central Hotel building in Jackson, has had the services of an architect figuring on plans for extensive improvements, including a new heating and water system.
