Rep. Bill Emerson files for re-election to the 8th District congressional seat, joining three Democrats vying for the post: Puxico, Mo., farmer Wayne Cryts, Bell City, Mo., farmer Johnny Dover and New Madrid, Mo., Attorney H. Riley Bock.

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Playing Florida Southern in the NCAA Division II quarterfinals, the Southeast Missouri State University Indians fall behind by as many as 15 points in the first half, but fight back to within two, 74-72, with 2:06 remaining; finally, however, the Tribe falls, 78-75.

1963

The Retail Division of the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce unanimously adopts a resolution opposing unrestricted Sunday sales and supporting "a modern and workable law to regulate the selling of nonessential merchandise on Sunday."

Pupils from throughout the district are at Houck Field House early in the morning with poster boards and scientific equipment of infinite variety, as they display their entries for the seventh annual Southeast Missouri Regional Science Fair.

1938

Baseball is no further along here today than it was before last night's meeting of fans and players, when not enough of either turned out to decide anything; while many of the players wish to continue the Municipal League and twilight ball, they admit finding sponsors will be difficult.

Local baseball may be floundering, but four Cape Girardeau boys are trying their luck with minor league teams; Dave Howe, pitcher, and Charles Templeton, infielder, will report to Eldorado, Ark., for tryouts with the Cotton States League club in April, while Melvin Schwab, first baseman, and Robert Hopper, outfielder, will try out with the Springfield club, a farm team of the St. Louis Cardinals.

1913

The steamer Cape Girardeau arrives here on its first trip of the season; quite a number of passengers are aboard, and a large shipment of merchandise is unloaded; an Overland automobile is brought down for the S.E.Mo. Motor Car Co.

White slave conditions finally have reached such an obnoxious point in Cape Girardeau that merchants here have filed a complaint with United States Agent Ed Drum.
