25 years ago: March 19, 1982

CAIRO, Ill. -- A group of Cairo police officers begin informational picketing in the morning to press their demands for talks with the city council on improvements in benefits and working conditions.

The vice president of Atlas Plastics Corp. at Cape Girardeau is in critical but stable condition at a Richmond, Ind., hospital, following a plane crash yesterday that killed another man and seriously injured the pilot; Homer W. Keller, 52, of Cape Girardeau, suffered a fractured knee and ankle and internal injuries when the twin-engine Cessna 421 crashed in fog about a mile short of a runway on a landing approach at Richmond.

50 years ago: March 19, 1957

Cape Girardeau voters will cast straw ballots at the April 2 constitutional amendment election on a proposal to install daylight saving time here for the summer months.

A deal is completed through which C.J. Winningham, his son, Claude Winningham, and other members of the family trade the Hotel Jackson to Sheriff John C. Crites and Harry McDowell for the Park Vue Theater at the north edge of Jackson.

75 years ago: March 19, 1932

David Statler, 72, member of one of this district's pioneer families and who spent his entire life in Cape Girardeau and Bollinger counties, dies of paralysis; he was the son of James and Emiline Seabaugh Statler.

The children of Cape Girardeau are going to have a real Easter egg hunt this year; instead of running along and snatching up sacks of eggs strewn on the ground, they will hunt for brightly colored eggs on a plot in Sunset Terrace.

100 years ago: March 19, 1907

Yesterday, M.E. Leming learned that he was a candidate for mayor of Cape Girardeau; it seems several fellows who have been left off other tickets decided not to be left out in the cold; without consulting Leming, they put together a ticket with his name at the head and secured enough names on petitions to be placed on the ballot.

Cape Girardeau's street car company is building another big car shed at its plant.
