Missouri Gov. John Ashcroft appoints Jackson lawyer John P. Lichtenegger to the University of Missouri Board of Curators, replacing Charles Kruse of Dexter, Mo., who was recently named director of the Missouri Department of Agriculture.

50 years ago: March 15, 1960

The Cape Girardeau School Board revealed for the first time last night that a proposed new junior high school building will be located on the northeast corner of the Central High School tract near the intersection of Thilenius Street and Caruthers Avenue.

Tony H. Hohler, 73, the oldest funeral director in Southeast Missouri and a highly regarded resident of Cape Girardeau, dies in the morning at a local hospital; Hohler, who was a director with the Walther Funeral Home, would have rounded out his 53rd year in the undertaking business April 1.

75 years ago: March 15, 1935

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Little Fruitland from Southeast Missouri -- smallest entrant in the 19th annual state high school basketball tournament -- won its way to the quarterfinals today with a spectacular first-round victory over Maryville, Mo.; the Fruitland school has only 54 students.

The Board of Adjustments has approved a proposal by Anna and Clara Bahn to build an apartment building on lots at the southwest corner of the Bellevue-North Pacific streets intersection; the brick building will be three stories high and contain six family apartments.

100 years ago: March 15, 1910

The Cape Girardeau County Court, apparently after struggling with all its might to get out of it, was compelled to award the contract for doing the county printing for the fiscal year 1910 to The Weekly Republican; last year, without letting other newspapers in the county know the job was for hire, the court awarded the contract to a Jackson newspaper.

About 100 trees are planted along Normal Avenue; it is hoped they won't get frostbitten and that the west side of the Normal School will soon be as attractive as the east.
