Republican David W. Schwab has announced his candidacy for state representative in the 158th District, a seat now held by Democrat Marvin Proffer.

The Cape Girardeau Board of Education, caught between ever-rising costs and the uncertainty of state legislative action, voted last night to seek the same tax levy as last year in the April 2 election; the decision came only after the board seriously considered asking voters for an additional 10 cents per $100 valuation.

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- For the fourth time, a proposal in Perry County to consolidate all school districts in the county into one district fails in a special election; there are now 21 school districts in the county.

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The Cape Girardeau College High Preps drove ahead to win, 35-23, over the Leadwood, Mo., Purple Pups last night in the state high school basketball tournament here; as a result the Preps will meet Houston, Mo., tonight.

Tom Scott, deputy warden at the Missouri State Penitentiary at Jefferson City for five years, tenders his resignation to the governor; Scott, a former Scott County sheriff, will move to Chaffee, Mo., within a week or two to a dwelling he recently purchased; he plans to be a candidate in the coming election for collector of Scott County.

A mass meeting at Common Pleas Courthouse last night nominated Henry A. Nussbaum and Dr. G.W. Walker as two candidates for the school board, to be voted upon at the regular election April 1.

All Cape Girardeau and Southeast Missouri will be glad to know that Gov. E.W. Major has again reappointed Louis Houck as a regent of the Normal School; there's no doubt the senate will confirm the nomination.
