25 years ago: March 12, 1985

Tired of waiting for the federal government to alleviate flooding along Cape LaCroix and Walker creeks here, local officials are in the process of putting together a flood relief project of their own which would be financed with a tax assessed property owners in the drainage district.

Representatives of 25 law enforcement agencies from nearly a 150-mile radius of Cape Girardeau County attend the first meeting of the Exclusive Regional Association of Special Enforcement at the Jackson.

50 years ago: March 12, 1960

Arraignment of four men accused in federal indictments with the November robbery of the Bank of Oran has been postponed a week in Federal District Court; weather conditions were such yesterday that court officials notified the deputy clerk here that they would be unable to come for the scheduled setting today.

Frank Huffman of Steele, Mo., was elected president of the Southeast Missouri Retail Lumber Dealers Association, succeeding Vernon Landgraf of Cape Girardeau, at the closing business session of the organization yesterday.

75 years ago: March 12, 1935

Floodwaters, spreading over Southeast Missouri in the wake of the 6 1/2-inch rainfall in the district have isolated several towns, paralyzed traffic at many points, and caused unknown damage to crops, roads and property.

The property at 630 Bellevue St. is being remodeled by Anna Hoffmeister, who recently bought the interests of her sisters and brother in the house, which is the old family home; she is making the house into apartments.

100 years ago: March 12, 1910

A letter from Judge B.F. Davis, from Philadelphia, states that he and his wife expect to get home today, after spending the winter in the East.

Seeing runaway horses pulling a wagon up Broadway hill, Homer Stevens, a night clerk at the Hays Hotel, steps into the street to stop the animals; when they pay him no attention, he jumps out of the way and grabs onto the back of the speeding wagon, pulling himself onboard and making his way to the front; he then grabs the reins and stops the animals before they can damage any of the buggies and other vehicles parked along the street.
