With the backing of the Cape Gira-rdeau fire and police departments, the cape County Ambulance Service and city Councilman Gail D. "Woody" Woodfin, the Cape County Board of Realtors launches a drive to locate residences with inadequate house numbers or no numbers at all.

About 5,000 teachers converge on Cape Girardeau for the 106th annual program of the Southeast Missouri District Teachers' Association; guest speaker is Dr. James Kern, who is associated with Winona State College.

50 years ago: March 12, 1957

Burglars entered three business buildings on Main street but got only about $75, it was discovered yesterday; the work done by the thieves included digging through a thick brick wall, after using a skylight to enter the building at 31 N. Main St.; from there the burglars tunneled through a double brick wall into the C.C. Miller store, 29 N. Main St.; the Brokerage store, 27 N. Main St., was also entered through a rear door.

Ozark Air Lines announces it is halting service to Cairo, Ill., effective Friday and will change it schedules through Cape Girardeau to conform to the withdrawal.

75 years ago: March 12, 1932

Staging an eleventh-hour rush, motor car owners swamp clerks at the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce building as they crowd into the office to get their new 1932 state automobile license plates.

Cape Girardeau voters will choose from a record-breaking list when they go to the polls in 10 days to nominate candidates for four city posts; when the filing time closed last night, there were five candidates in the race for mayor and 34 names in the crowded list seeking seats on the city commission.

100 years ago: March 12, 1907

It appears Cape Girardeau will soon have the long-desired railroad connection with the Thebes, Ill., bridge; Louis Houck informs The Daily Republican that he has finally secured all the necessary material and will not stop until the tracks to the Thebes bridge are completed and trains running.

Alvine Bremermann, with Bernice Allison, leave Cape Girardeau for New Madrid, Mo., to visit her sister, Mrs. J.F. Gordon.
