25 years ago: March 11, 1980

The health hazards of the debris-clogged Delta slough, which county health officials have called a breeding ground for malaria, may be eliminated as the result of a plan approved by Delta residents and county officials; the plan calls for the property owners to maintain the portion of the slough which borders his or her land.

More than 700 people tried out the new enclosed swimming pool at Central High School last night, the first day the pool was open to the public for free swimming.

50 years ago: March 11, 1955

Ben Schweer filed yesterday as a candidate for Jackson city marshal; Irwin W. Brune previously filed for the job; Schweer is employed by Milde Coca Cola Co., and Brune is operator of a service station.

Dozens of farmers in the McClure, Ill., community turn out to lend a hand in plowing 100 acres of land owned by Manuel Colyer, located just east of the traffic bridge in Illinois; Colyer is recovering from major surgery which kept him in a hospital for nearly four weeks and is not yet able to work.

75 years ago: March 11, 1930

E.L. Miller, B. Hugh Smith and W.J. Kies file with the clerk of the school board as candidates for membership on the board of education, subject to the general city election in April; Kies is a candidate to fill the unexpired term of W.W. Watkins, which is one year, a post he now fills; the other two are candidates for the three-year term.

Fire of mysterious origin destroys valuable documents and causes other damage estimated at $1,000 to the office of the Popp and Springer Realty Co. in the First National Bank building; documents destroyed were deeds to property, contracts and other papers of value to the firm and its clients.

100 years ago: March 11, 1905

Mr. and Mrs. Louis Houck return from Washington, D.C., where they have been for about two months; Houck went there to study the records which had to do with Missouri in past days.

In spite of rain and mud, a large number of Jacksonians took part in the organization Tuesday of a commercial club; William B. Schaefer was elected president, R.W. Russell vice president, E.D. Hays secretary, and William Bruening treasurer; the club has 123 members.
