MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- The water system in west Marble Hill is expected to be on again this afternoon after being shut off much of yesterday and this morning; the city had to drain its 155,000-gallon water tower last night to replace a malfunctioning valve between the tower and the well.
PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- International Shoe Co. here will close its doors this month; about 250 jobs will be lost.

George Godwin of the Teachers College Indians is acting as coach of the College High Preps on their trip to the state basketball tournament; their regular coach, Eugene McDonald, has been sidelined by a case of the mumps; the Preps will take on the Trenton High team tonight.
Dr. John D. Porterfield, 62, prominent Cape Girardeau physician and surgeon, and a former member of the school board, dies at the Veterans Hospital in North Little Rock, Ark.; Porterfield, the son of Dr. John D. Porterfield Sr. and Fannie Cullem Porterfield, was born at Commerce; he moved with his family to Cape Girardeau when he was 13.
Albert Haman, who has been working at the Hoch furniture store, has resigned that position and will move back to the farm.
Several weeks ago, W.L. Nichols, his son W.L Nichols Jr., and his grandson, a young man about 21 years old, moved to Cape Girardeau from Fulton, Ky.; all three are carpenters; the elder Nichols, even though past 80, can still hit the nail square on the head without as much effort as his son and grandson.
