25 years ago: March 10, 1982

About 30 residents living in the area of Highway 177 about two miles north of Cape Girardeau have organized to oppose the possibility of the city putting a landfill near where they live; the group organized after residents in the neighborhood, located not far from the existing landfill, observed city workers taking core samples from the land in an effort to determine if it is suitable for a landfill.

Contracts have been let for a $5 million expansion project at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau; the new critical-care addition will be the fourth major expansion or renovation project for the hospital in the last five years; Penzel Construction Co. Inc. of Jackson is the general contractor for the project.

50 years ago: March 10, 1957

Members of the South Side Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau have accepted the resignation of the Rev. A.J. Langston, pastor; Langston, who observed his 70th birthday in January, is retiring because of ill health.

In observance of the Day of Dedication in Methodist churches, members of the Illmo Methodist Church hold a special dedicatory service for the church organ which was installed there more than a year ago.

75 years ago: March 10, 1932

A reduction of $1,485,945 in the assessed valuation of farm lands and town lots in Cape Girardeau County is recommended in a letter received by County Clerk Edwin L. Kies at Jackson from the chairman of the Missouri State Tax Commission.

The lagoon at Fairgrounds Park in Cape Girardeau froze over for the first time this winter yesterday; today it has a heavy layer of ice.

100 years ago: March 10, 1907

The pupils of Randol School gave a fine program of recitations, declamations, compositions and other numbers Friday, when the school closed for the season; the school, which is about five miles from Cape Girardeau, was taught by W.A. Rau.

Joe Juden arrives from Poplar Bluff, Mo., in the evening with his family; they now reside at Cape Girardeau, where Juden has taken charge of the Juden-Lilly Mercantile Co.
