Late-winter storm blanketed southern Missouri Tuesday night and early Wednesday with as much as 18 inches of snow, closing roads, schools and businesses; more than foot of snow fell on Cape Girardeau area during 15-hour period.

With closure of school on Wednesday, Jackson public school students have missed eight days this school year because of weather; in Cape Girardeau, public schools have been closed four days; but for both districts, prospects of another day or more of canceled classes means problems in school calendar.

Federal government reported this week that 243 Southeast Missouri State University students have defaulted on $129,692 in student loans; this makes school's default rate 5.8 percent; national average is 17.3.

50 years ago: March 10, 1954

By tie vote, one member abstaining, city council rejects third reading of re-warding and reregistration ordinance which if adopted, attorney for city firemen says might have effect of invalidating petitions being circulated for recall of Mayor Manning P. Greer and Commissioner Roy Smith; result of vote brings out some bitter words, and mayor declares petitions will be challenged in court by himself and Smith.

Edna Albrecht of Illmo will leave Friday for Peoria, Ill., where she will pitch softball this summer for Peoria Caterpillars; Albrecht hurled five no-hit and no-run games during her pitching career for Broadway team of Cape Girardeau.

75 years ago: March 10, 1929

Cape Girardeau Co-operative Standard Training School for officers and teachers of Sunday Schools opens in afternoon at Centenary Methodist Church; about 50 people are enrolled for course.

Denzel Osborne, one of most active members of Red Star Baptist Church, has been granted license to preach at regular meeting of church Wednesday night; he was voted this privilege in view of his intense interest in all branches of church activity.
