BIEHLE, Mo. -- An explosion in an automobile repair shop seriously injures Frank Meyer, 31, and the subsequent fire destroys the garage he operates; Meyer, who runs Meyer's Garage on a rural road about two miles south of town, is in St. John's Mercy Hospital in St. Louis with severe burns.

A $150,000 bond issue won overwhelming approval in the Kelly School District yesterday; the bond money will be used to replace the roof on the high school building, repair the elementary school building roof, purchase replacement school buses and provide funds for possible federal energy projects.

50 years ago: Feb. 9, 1958

Scout Sunday is observed by Boy Scout Troop 1 and Cub Pack 1 of St. Mary's Cathedral School, when the Scouts and their fathers attend Mass in a body in the morning; breakfast is served in the school cafeteria after the service.

Dr. W.W. Davault, who has spent 46 years as a country doctor and who will celebrate his 69th birthday tomorrow, is the honored guest at a surprise ceremony and basket dinner at the First Baptist Church in Delta; the event is sponsored by the Brotherhood of the Church, with friends of the physician from the Allenville-Delta community taking part.

Franklin Owen, center for the Teachers College Indians, leads his team in scoring in their three basketball games on the road; C. Huber, a forward, is next with 12 points, and Donald Pritchard third with 11.

An application for a position on the city police force as motorcycle patrolman has been filed with the city clerk by Paul B. Vaughn; Vaughn is 21 and has been a resident of Cape Girardeau 3 1/2 years; he served three years in the Army and as a military police officer for two years.

100 years ago: Feb. 9, 1908

The largest audience in the history of the Normal School's lyceum course -- more than 1,000 -- assembled in the big auditorium last night to hear the Dunbar quartet and bell ringers.

W.J. Masek has purchased the tailoring business of J.T. Sackman on Main Street and will continue to run it at the same place; for eight years Masek has been connected with the business as chief tailor and cutter.
