It didn't get extremely cold overnight, and there wasn't a great deal of precipitation; the rain, sleet and snow that did fall leave the Cape Girardeau area blanketed with a glaze of ice; many area schools, especially in rural districts, are closed, while Cape Girardeau's public schools remain open.

Associate Circuit Judge Marybelle Mueller of Jackson files for re-election on the Democratic ticket; she is completing her second four-year term.

50 years ago: Feb. 9, 1957

Dr. W.W. Parker, who served a longer tenure as president of Southeast Missouri State College than any of his predecessors, dies at Southeast Missouri Hospital, where he had been taken a week ago after suffering a stroke.

A loan of $1.25 million to finance construction of new dormitories to ease the housing shortage on the State College campus will be sought from the federal Housing and Home Finance Agency, announces president Mark. F. Scully.

75 years ago: Feb. 9, 1932

Jewelry confiscated by officers at Poplar Bluff, Mo., yesterday in an investigation of what is believed to be a major burglar gang has been identified as part of the loot taken in the $2,500 burglary of the Gately Store in Cape Girardeau Jan. 5; E.H. Scarlett, manager of Gately's, and B.E. Chostner, a clerk, identified 20 men's and women's rings and seven men's watches as a part of the loot taken from their store.

The Louis K. Juden Post of the American Legion plans to participate in the national "war against depression"; members will canvass factories, stores and other larger business places, asking that they employ at least one additional regular worker.

100 years ago: Feb. 9, 1907

Yesterday afternoon the County Court again awarded the contract for the county printing to The Weekly Republican; this is the third year this newspaper has been given the contract.

John Rudert of Tilsit has received word from his son, Ben G. Rudert, that he will soon return from the Philippines, where he is playing in the 8th Cavalry band; he is stationed at Fort McKinley, two miles from Manila.
