50 years ago: Feb. 8, 1961

The long-predicted snow arrived late yesterday afternoon and left the Cape Girardeau district with slippery highways and streets, causing some schools to close and generally slowing traffic; the supply of cinders in Cape Girardeau remains at a premium; city officials are rationing the 10-truckload supply on hand.

Effective Jan. 1, the facilities of Guth Bros. Block Co., 120 N. Broadview St., were expanded to include a complete line of masonry building supplies; additional office space and a large display area were erected, and the new business operates under the name of Cape Masonry Corp.

75 years ago: Feb. 8, 1936

Working at least an hour to obtain entrance, burglars last night took only a handful of watches after breaking into the Gately clothing store, 313 Broadway; entrance was gained from the basement.

Denver Wright, who this winter chased wolves over the hills of Cape Girardeau and Perry counties, is off on another adventure; stopping in Cape Girardeau en route to southern Florida, Wright says he will stalk panthers and alligators in the Everglades.

100 years ago: Feb. 8, 1911

A committee from the Cape Girardeau City Council appeared before the county court at Jackson yesterday and presented a statement showing the city has paid out $7,800 for improvements around the Common Pleas Courthouse, and asking the county to chip in half the expenses; the request was granted, the court ordering a warrant issued for $3,900 in favor of the city.

Miller & Kinder, proprietors of the Good Hope Drug Store, are very cheerful as they expect to move into the new three-story Anderson building on Good Hope Street ahead of schedule.
