Sister M. Virgilia Beikler, who for 13 years was administrator of Saint Francis Hospital on Good Hope Street in Cape Girardeau and in that capacity exercised the primary leadership role in the construction of the new medical center on Route K, died of a heart attack at Saint Francis; she was 74 years old.

Cape Girardeau County Court officials express their disappointment over the lack of concrete proposals made by a committee created to advise the court on implementing a building permit system; county officials intend to establish a building permit program in the unincorporated areas of the county by April.

50 years ago: Feb. 8, 1957

Tennis courts at Capaha Park -- two concrete and two of asphalt constructed too late for use last year -- will be lighted for night play this summer, says Commissioner J.W. McBride; the courts are together at the foot of the terrace and on the same level with the baseball diamond.

All mineral rights to the land in Trail of Tears State Park have been acquired by Cape Girardeau County and will be included in the deed for the 3,000-acre tract when it is turned over to the State Park Board.

75 years ago: Feb. 8, 1932

The Gerhardt Construction Co. receives a formal contract from the government for construction of the addition to the Federal Building at Cape Girardeau, and it is to be returned shortly with the approval of the building firm; contract price for the addition is $16,175.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Unnerstall have purchased from Mr. and Mrs. A.F. Deneke a modern brick bungalow at 337 N. Park Ave. in Cape Girardeau; the Unnerstalls plan to move there as soon as redecorating is finished; Unnerstall is a druggist here.

100 years ago: Feb. 8, 1907

Ed Pott, a longtime manager of the Planters' Mill at Cape Girardeau, has purchased the stave mill at Ardeola, Mo., and will go there to run it; Gus Pott has taken his place at the local mill.

The walls left standing after the Cross Printing Co. burned recently are being taken down at the order of the fire board; they were threatening to fall onto F.A. Kage's office on Broadway.
