50 years ago: Feb. 7, 1961

The move to the Jackson City Hall is made by the city superintendent, the collector and city clerk; the quarters in the courthouse and the superintendent's office over the county jail will be vacated as the city officers arrange their work in their new quarters; the public library to occupy a part of the new City Hall building is awaiting new equipment, particularly shelving.

Glenn E. Looney, who left Cape Girardeau in 1940 to join the Navy's hospital corps and who attained the rank of chief hospitalman at the close of World War II, has been promoted to senior chief, a new rank that has just been made available to Navy enlisted men.

75 years ago: Feb. 7, 1936

Southeast Missouri highways are covered with ice and snow, a heavy blanket covering the district from the Arkansas line north to Fredericktown overnight; Cape Girardeau, with 2 inches of snow still on the ground from a previous storm, received two more inches.

Dewey Hinton is the first person to take a petition from the office of the city clerk and simultaneously announce his candidacy for nomination for Cape Girardeau city commissioner in the coming primary.

100 years ago: Feb. 7, 1911

D.R. Kinder, who for the past two years has lived on North Spanish Street in Cape Girardeau, is loading his belongings into a car; he will locate south of Malden, Mo., on the farm of Mr. Crites.

Esquire B.F. Winters of Laflin, Mo., and his son, Professor J.D. Winters of Whitewater, were in Cape Girardeau yesterday, the guests of Dr. J.M. Finney; the elder Winters bought a Bollinger County farm from Finney while here.
