Members of the federal Environmental Protection Agency will be in the Cape Girardeau area this week to perform testing on the former Kem-Pest laboratory site near the Mississippi River north of Cape Girardeau.

Nearly three years after being purchased by a group of Cape Girardeau investors, the Oldtimers Agricultural Museum has a new home; Joe Mirgeaux and Gene Rhodes announced Friday that the museum will move into the former IXL Manufacturing Co. buildings in Jackson.

A delegation of 24 men representing five small incorporated Cape Girardeau County towns appear before the County Court asking for a share of the state gas tax money; the men represent Old Appleton, Pocahontas, Oak Ridge, Gordonville and Whitewater.

After playing two almost faultless games, Notre Dame High School was brought down to Earth last night with a thud, as crosstown rival Central High beat the Bulldogs, 86-76, on the losers' court; the victory was the 15th straight City Series win for the Tigers.

Mrs. Pete George and Pete Castianes received word Saturday of the death of their brother, Demosthenes Castianes, 31, which occurred Feb. 2 in a hospital in Sparta, Greece; Castianes, who had been associated with his brother in the operation of the Manhattan Cafe here, left Cape Girardeau last June for a visit to his native land.

The question of whether the city of Cape Girardeau has the right to prevent Sunday operation of the walkathon amusement place on South Main Street shifts to the courts; only a few hours before its license to operate was to expire, the company secured an injunction in Common Pleas Court to prevent the city or police from interfering with it.

1914

Renfroe Gibbs, who has been employed by the Buckner-Ragsdale Co. for about two years, is considering a fine offer to attach himself to a large store in Billings, Mont., at a huge salary; he won't decide whether to accept the offer until Robert Lamkin returns from New York.

First National Bank of this city is the first local institution to take advantage of the recently enacted currency law and become a member of the regional bank, which will most likely be established at St. Louis.
