Dr. Harold O. Grauel, longtime educator and civic and fraternal leader, has been named the 25th recipient of the Golden Deeds Award from the Cape Girardeau Evening Exchange Club.

Southeast Missouri State University English professor Nolan Porterfield has been nominated for a 1988 Grammy Award, to be presented March 2 at Radio City Music Hall in New York; Porterfield has been nominated for "Best Album Notes" for his work with a Smithsonian Recordings album, "Jimmie Rodgers on Record: America's Blue Yodeler."

1963

THEBES, Ill. -- The Mississippi River will be abandoned as the water supply for Thebes in favor of a deep well system to be constructed on a local-federal matching funds basis; the town will be asked to vote a $23,000 bond issue to finance its part of the costs.

A spectacular fire punctuated by roaring towers of flame destroys a truck carrying about 2,000 gallons of liquid petroleum gas at Dutchtown; the fire is contained to the propane truck, owned by Uregas Distributors Inc. of Cape Girardeau, and a nearby fence; the fire started while the truck driver was filling the propane gas tank at a fruit stand near the intersection of highways 74 and 25.

1938

The Rev. Marvin C. Reichert of Chicago, who has been selected as pastor of the First English Lutheran Church, preaches his first sermons at his new charge; he succeeds the Rev. Roland G. Riechmann, who is now at Mt. Carmel, Ill.

Dr. Don E. Schooler, pastor of Centenary Methodist Church, speaks on "When God Speaks to a Boy" during the morning service as part of the observation of Boy Scout Day.

1913

Two successful farmers, Mason Dellinger and John E. Street of Frankford, Ind., are in the city, having just bought some fine farming lands from Mercer Wilson and Julien Friant in the alluvial district near Commerce, Mo.; both are arranging to move onto their new farms at once.

The Francisco Sisters, who are performing at the Opera House, are the daughters of the late John Bartmann Jr., a former resident of Cape Girardeau; Mrs. Bartmann, with her three children, lives in Little Rock, Ark.
