A position paper delivered to Southeast Missouri State University's Academic Council yesterday by Provost Dr. Leslie Cochran outlines extensive changes in the school's teacher education program and recommends the closing of the University School.

50 years ago: Feb. 6, 1960

C.W. "Carl" Bauerle of Cape Girardeau filed yesterday for the Republican nomination for county assessor.

Since next week is Boy Scout Week and the 50th anniversary of the organization in the United States is to be observed, it is interesting to note that the movement started in Cape Girardeau before the national body was formed; the first troop here was organized in 1908 under the leadership of Coach Henry Schulte of the Normal School faculty.

75 years ago: Feb. 6, 1935

Attorneys here aren't certain what effect the elevation of Judge C.B. Faris from the Federal Court bench to the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals today will have on pending suits, including status of the Cape Girardeau Bridge Co. case.

Nick Carter, for the past 6 years manager for the Tuthill Tire Station, 134 S. Sprigg St., has opened a tire shop of his own at 825 Broadway.

100 years ago: Feb. 6, 1910

About 40 friends of Mrs. Ellen A. Wright surprised her on her 82nd birthday yesterday, calling on Wright at her historic home with well-filled dinner baskets and a big cake decorated with 82 candles.

Theodore C. Bock, one of the pioneer residents of Cape Girardeau, arrived home last week after an absence of 10 weeks in Centralia, Ill., where he visited his daughter, Mrs. E.J. Hale, and her family.
