A new lease on life may have been given the Marquette Hotel; Paducah, Ky., businessman Walter Parr announces plans to buy the 53-year-old building, along with plans for the construction of a high-rise condominium on the hotel property; the condominium will be built first, and the second phase of the project will include renovation of the hotel within the next three years.

Air Illinois plans to introduce a midday flight from Cape Girardeau to St. Louis beginning March 1; the 1:20 p.m. flight is being added because of passenger demands from Cape Girardeau to St. Louis.

50 years ago: Feb. 6, 1956

The Distinguished Service Award of the Missouri State Jaycees was presented to Vinson Rueseler, Cape Girardeau automobile dealer, at the weekend meeting of the state board of the organization at Springfield, Mo.

Acting on a request made previously by the newly formed Cape Girardeau County Agricultural Extension Council, the county court approves an appropriation of $8,922 for operation this year of the service; the sum is an increase of $2,225 over the amount appropriated from county funds last year.

75 years ago: Feb. 6, 1931

Negotiations have been completed for the purchase of the American Gauze & Cotton Co. in Cape Girardeau by the Battle Creek Surgical Supply Corp. of Battle Creek, Mich., it is announced by officials of the two firms; the deal, in effect, is a merger of the local concern with the Michigan corporation.

Frank H. Schonhoff, 80, retired farmer and blacksmith who resided on the Gordonville Road west of town, died yesterday; born in Hanover, Germany, Aug. 29, 1850, he came to this country early in life and for many years lived in Perry County; in 1904 he moved his family to Cape Girardeau County.

100 years ago: Feb. 6, 1906

Dr. H.L. Cunningham of Cape Girardeau and his brother, J.W. Cunningham of Farmington, Mo., go down to Hayti, Mo., to look at some farm lands.

Workers are busy laying the cables for the new automatic telephone exchange which will connect all the Normal School buildings; when this system is completed, the Normal will have a modern telephone plant, which will give a most convenient means of communication; two phones on the circuit will be installed in Academic Hall to give connection with the city.
