The congregation of Southside Baptist Church celebrates the dedication of its new church building; the new church was built on the same site, 805 Hackberry St., as the former Southside Church, which was destroyed by fire Dec. 16, 1987.
Rodeo fans waited inside as cowboys rounded up an escaped bull on a parking lot near the Show Me Center, following Friday night's Longhorn World Championship Rodeo; the one-ton bull escaped through a door someone had left open on the north side of the building just before the end of the show; it was captured about 15 minutes later by several rodeo contestants on horseback.
Workers at the new First Federal Building on Broadway are lifting huge, precast concrete beams into place for fitting into the roof structure; a total of 44 of the V-shaped roof beams will be placed across the top of the building.

The Frisco Gulf train, which left Cape Girardeau at 2:10 p.m., is wrecked late in the evening at James, a small station three miles west of Hayti, Mo.; criminals intent on malicious mischief disconnected two large rods running from a switch to the rails, which cause the water tender, the baggage and smoking cars to turn over on their sides in a ditch; the women's coach and sleeping car are also thrown into the ditch, but remain upright; the perpetrators sprinkled red pepper on the ground to prevent dogs from tracking them.
The saloon fixtures at the old Crescent bar, at the corner of Broadway and Fountain Street, are carted away; they'll probably be shipped to their owners, the Murphysboro, Ill., brewery.
