25 years ago: Feb. 5, 1986

Cape Girardeans narrowed the list of mayoral candidates yesterday, selecting businessman F.E. "Gene" Rhodes to face City Councilman Donald Strohmeyer; city council candidates elected to compete in the general election were David Limbaugh, James Rust, Ken Richardson, Frank Bean, Hugh White and Michael Annis.

The Capaha Arrow, Southeast Missouri State University's student newspaper, holds a 75th anniversary party at the University Center; several former editors and advisors gather to talk about the newspaper as they knew it.

50 years ago: Feb. 5, 1961

The congregation of Third Baptist Church has called to the pastorate of its church the Rev. and Mrs. Fred Lacy; natives of Illinois, the couple has been in pastoral and mission work for over 25 years.

Replacing the Rev. Alonzo Rhodes, who resigned in December as pastor of the New Hope Baptist Church, is the Rev. Robert Hurte; Hurte served the New Hope congregation in 1957.

75 years ago: Feb. 5, 1936

Works Progress employees here will be paid during the frigid weather even if they don't get to put in full time, with the pledge that they'll make the work up in later half-month periods; this morning's low temperature is 4 degrees.

Politics warms up in Cape Girardeau County, as two Republicans announce their candidacy; J. Henry Caruthers, an attorney, files for the GOP nomination for judge of the Common Pleas Court; John Wescoat, chairman of the county Young Republicans' Club, will seek the nomination for sheriff.

100 years ago: Feb. 5, 1911

The Rev. E.F. Abbott, new pastor for the First Presbyterian Church, occupies the pulpit for the morning and evening services; Abbott comes to Cape Girardeau bearing the friendly recommendations of the ministers of other denominations in the city of Boonville, Mo., where he lately pastored the Presbyterian church.

There are several important features during services of Centenary Methodist Church; in the morning is the baptism of infants; in the evening an open air meeting is held at the corner of Good Hope and Sprigg streets.
