Winter attacks the area again with the second snowstorm in a week, shattering any premature thoughts that spring is nearly ready to make its entry; three inches of snow falls on Cape Girardeau by midmorning, closing city schools for the first time this year and forcing area schools to shut down once again.
The Cape Girardeau Masonic Temple Board will celebrate final payment of the temple's $162,000 mortgage with a mortgage-burning ceremony Sunday afternoon at the temple, 2307 Broadway; the structure was completed in 1969.
The postal department has discontinued 13 Southeast Missouri fourth-class post offices, one in Cape Girardeau County, in its effort to provide better service more economically; the office closed in this county was at Hildebrand.
Perry Mayfield of Mayfield, Mo., in Bollinger County, is in the midst of the maple syrup harvest season; the market is good for his product, which sells for $4 per gallon; Mayfield has no trouble selling 100 gallons or so during a good season.
The Very Rev. W.P. Barr, C.M., Provincial of the Western Province of the Congregation of the Mission, and superior of educational and parochial work of the Catholic Church in this country, was the guest of St. Vincent's College Monday and Tuesday while on his regular tour of inspection among colleges of the denomination; Barr, who lives in St. Louis, was greatly pleased with the work of the local college.
Five veterans of the World War and members of the 128th Infantry, 35th Division, swapped memories over the weekend; Harry Kaysing of St. Louis visited with Girardeans R.B. Baker, Raymond H. Brady, John O'Donoghue and L.R. Lindsay.
A special praise service, featuring the best musical talents the congregation has to offer, is held in the evening at the Presbyterian Church; the Rev. Brown's sermon is devoted especially to the rendition of music.
