U.S. Rep. Bill Emerson has teamed up with U.S. Reps. Harold Volkmer, who represents Hannibal, Mo., and David Durbin and Jerry Costello, who represent Illinois, to seek funding for replacement bridges crossing Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau and Hannibal.

With only 13 days remaining before effective date of his resignation, Southeast Missouri State University Athletic Director Russ Sloan is suspended from his duties at university; suspension comes after announcement of investigation of athletic department recruitment procedures and several differences of opinion between Sloan and school's president.

August Seyer of near Chaffee says he feels fine but still remembers nothing of incident in which he sustained skull fracture Jan. 28; he was found unconscious and bleeding beside county road near Chaffee eight days ago.

75 years ago: Feb. 5, 1929

Residents of Cape Girardeau, particularly young people, had good time last night, as hundreds gathered on streets with sleds to celebrate first real snowfall in two years; coasters have merry time on North Henderson, North Pacific, Mill Street and Lacey Street hills.
