Nine contractors submitted bids for construction of the Jackson public library/city hall building, with the city council and library board opening the bids last night; apparent low base bid was submitted by Carl Penzel Construction Co. of Jackson.

Bringing the number of candidates in the race to 12, J.W. Herod, an insurance representative, filed yesterday for the nomination for Cape Girardeau city commissioner.

75 years ago: Feb. 3, 1935

Dr. Joseph A. Serena, former president of Teachers College, and his wife are now in Seattle; the Christian Church in which he is preaching is the largest Protestant church in West Seattle.

Leaving a trail of chicken heads and feathers, thieves last night stole 22 hens from the henhouse of Mr. and Mrs. Barney B. Hodge, living on the Bend Road at the north edge of Cape Girardeau.

100 years ago: Feb. 3, 1910

The McAtee Mercantile Co. and the Cape County Milling Co. in Jackson are both buying corn for shipment south, overbidding one another and paying 75 cents per bushel, which is 11 cents in excess of St. Louis market prices; McAtee began buying corn a year ago and in just a few days the Scott County Milling Co. began following suit; hence this war of prices; farmers are smiling and hauling corn despite the bad roads.

Professor H.L. Albert, one of the best-known members of the Normal School faculty, has resigned his post to go into government service.
