CAIRO, Ill. -- A shooting spree at a Cairo public housing project has left three men dead and two other people wounded; one of the dead is believed to have shot the other four people in three separate apartments in the Pyramid Courts Housing Project, before turning the gun on himself.

50 years ago: Feb. 3, 1955

Prospects are good for an early start on construction of the National Guard Armory which has been proposed for Cape Girardeau and which has been hanging fire for months; Mayor Narvol A. Randol says that in a recent letter from Col. H.L. Engelbrecht, he was told it might be possible to advertise for bids by the first of April.

C.E. Stiver, who as city engineer planned and supervised much of Cape Girardeau's original public works construction program, dies at his home at age 71.

75 years ago: Feb. 3, 1930

Two burglaries netted thieves about $250 in clothing and money last night; yeggs entered the Kinder drug store, 627 Good Hope St., and took $11.92 from the post office sub-station and less than a dollar from the street-car token funds.

D.M. Scivally, for 10 years prominently identified with the Missouri State Highway Department in engineering and general road construction work, has been retained as engineer for the Cape Girardeau Special Road District.

100 years ago: Feb. 3, 1905

The Rev. Osborn of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Jackson has been lecturing on spiritualism and explaining the doctrine of spiritual medium; he refuses to heed his congregation's plea that he cease giving the exhibitions.

L.J. Albert and W.S. Dearmont, president of the Normal School, have returned from Jefferson City, where they reported on the condition of the institution.
