25 years ago: Feb. 28, 1981

The 10th Congressional District Republican Committee has selected Madison County Republican chairman John M. Counts and Dunklin County chairman B. Neil Lewis as candidates for the state legislative redistricting committee.

Living in a Southeast Missouri State University dormitory and using university textbooks will both cost more in the fall, if the school's board of regents approves fee hikes this month; the university is recommending that the annual room and board fees for students living in university housing be increased by $50.

50 years ago: Feb. 28, 1956

Edgar P. Bock, general agent for an insurance company, files his petition as a candidate for Cape Girardeau city commissioner in the primary election to be held March 20.

State College, which had asked for $4,340,636 for a building program under Missouri's $75 million bond issue, finds the state Division of the Budget has trimmed the figure to $2,737,700; following are amounts asked for by the college, followed by amounts recommended by the budget director: science building, $1,691,280 and $900,000; women's dormitory, $587,069 and $410,000; men's dorm, $500,000 and $350,000; practical arts building, $777,020 and $500,000; women's physical education building, $543,744 and $445,000; garage, $30,000 and $20,000; deep wells, $25,000 and $20,000, as well as $87,700 for repairs and remodeling on campus, as allowed by the Division of the Budget.

75 years ago: Feb. 28, 1931

Petitions asking the Cape Girardeau City Council to place a tax of one cent on each gallon of gasoline sold in the city for motor vehicle purposes in order to create a street-maintenance fund have been prepared and will be placed in circulation next week.

Equipment of a miniature golf course at 822 Broadway, where evenings last summer Girardeans tried their best to make the 18-hole course under par, is being moved out.

100 years ago: Feb. 28, 1906

The day that pleases the local river watchers better than Christmas arrives; the steamer Grey Eagle gets them out early in the morning with her two long and three short blasts.

Maj. C.A. Macomb, 9th Cavalry, USA, is in Cape Girardeau and inspects the local company of militia in the afternoon and evening; Macomb finds Company K, according to his remarks after the inspection, in good shape and up to the previous standards.
