50 years ago: Feb. 26, 1962

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- A fire overnight caused an estimated $250,000 in damage to a two-story business building and threatened other surrounding structures here; firemen from five communities fought the blaze at the northwest corner of Main and Yoakum streets for over four hours.

The already sodden earth in the Cape Girardeau area took an additional soaking yesterday, with rainfall measured at more than 1 1/2 inches in some spots; the storm sent small streams to bank full, washing out at least two bridges in the county.

75 years ago: Feb. 26, 1937

MOUND CITY, Ill. -- Although the major portion of the water in the drainage area between Mound City and Mounds, Ill., has been forced from the basin enclosed by levees and hills, the graves of 5,563 war veterans and their families at the national cemetery here remain under water.

A roster posted at police headquarters by chief Herbert F. Wickham yesterday announced that Charles Schweer, recently a patrolman, is now a desk sergeant and Clarence Parrott, formerly an extra policeman, is a patrolman; other officers are John M. Wilson, Paul B. McNeely, E.W. Hirsch, C.L. Childs, H.J. Reed, Morris Huckstep, Bruno Schultz, Leo B. Hill and George Staley.

100 years ago: Feb. 26, 1912

A flurry was created in Jackson yesterday among the military men when news came that more troops have been ordered to the Mexican border; nearly all of the men of Company F are ready and hoping they will be commanded to take part.

F.W. Bonner of Quincy, Ill., formerly a resident of Cape Girardeau, is here visiting his brother-in-law, W.F. Bohnsack Sr.; years ago, Bonner was a miller at Benton, Mo., and later was connected with the Pott mill in this city.
