After nearly four years of dispensing justice in the courtroom, U.S. District Judge Stephen Limbaugh Sr. says the ideas about law and justice he brought with him to the job have lasted, but he has learned a lot about the legal system; Limbaugh is back in a Cape Girardeau courtroom this week hearing a case; he has lived in St. Louis since taking the federal bench in 1983.
Southeast Missouri State University has awarded a $289,300 contract for continued removal of asbestos materials in various school structures; when completed, practically all exposed asbestos-containing materials in campus buildings will have been eliminated.
Simpson Oil Co. has been purchased by the Sinclair Oil Co. at a total sale price of $6 million; the price is reported to be $4 million for the Simpson properties and $2 million for the company's inventory; included in the sale were the Colonial Restaurant and the adjoining service station in Cape Girardeau.
The State College Indians narrowly defeat last-place Missouri Mines at Rolla, 95-91, in overtime to win the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association basketball title; the Indians will take part in the NCAA Division Regional Tournament at Jonesboro, Ark., March 9 and 10.
The Game and Fish League of Cape Girardeau County was organized last night by local sportsmen at the Common Pleas Courthouse; after organizing, Charles W. Boutin, an ardent sportsman, was endorsed for membership on the new Missouri State Game and Fish Commission, which will be named by Gov. Lloyd C. Stark in July.
Indications are that construction can be started within three weeks on a new gymnasium building at John S. Cobb School.
