25 years ago: Feb. 24, 1983

Sen. John C. Danforth has recommended that Cape Girardeau lawyer Stephen N. Limbaugh Sr., be appointed a U.S. District judge for the Eastern District of Missouri; emphasizing his trial experience and the time he has spent in federal and state courts, Danforth refers to Limbaugh as "a member of one of the outstanding families of the Missouri bar."

The Southeast Missouri State University Board of Regents faces a long agenda; among other actions, the board accepts a resolution of cooperation between the school and the city of Cape Girardeau pertaining to the proposed development of a multipurpose building.

50 years ago: Feb. 24, 1958

Ice which dropped the Mississippi River downstream from Cape Girardeau most of last week moved out over the weekend, permitting normal traffic on the stream, but a new obstacle looms -- a falling river stage. The stage today is 6.7 feet, as compared to 12.5 feet at the height of the gorge.

Elmer R. Schaper, active for many years in Cape Girardeau County farm programs, files for the Democratic nomination for county treasurer;.

75 years ago: Feb. 24, 1933

Cape Girardeau city officials are considering applying to the Reconstruction Finance Corporation for a $6,000 loan for a self-liquidating project; however, the problem facing the city is the putting up of collateral adequate to meet the conditions of the loan; the money would be used in a city relief project.

Frisco agent John F. Neal says a special round-trip fare of $41.45 to Washington, D.C., will be offered by the railroad for the Roosevelt inauguration ceremonies.

100 years ago: Feb. 24, 1908

At an early hour, a large grey wolf slips into Chaffee, Mo., and attacks four people; one is so severely bitten he is taken to St. Louis to receive treatment at the Frisco hospital and probably at the Pasteur Institute.

Julian Miller, son of W.H. Miller, of the trust company, brings over a big load of law books from Jackson and is busily engaged in opening his offices in the Himmelberger-Harrison building; young Miller has formed a partnership with I.R. Kelso, one of the best lawyers in Southeast Missouri.
