Air Illinois will resume turboprop service between Cape Girardeau and St. Louis and other cities beginning next Wednesday; the company's four DeHavilland Twin Otters will make three round trips between Cape Girardeau and St. Louis on weekdays and two on weekends.
Rep. Bill Emerson of Cape Girardeau says he would like to see Illinois and Missouri take over maintenance of the Chester Bridge, which would eliminate the need for tolls on the only remaining toll bridge between St. Louis and New Orleans.

The rifle team of Headquarters Company, Missouri National Guard at Cape Girardeau wins the regimental small-bore rifle honors in a match against Company F of Perryville, Mo.; the local team is composed of Master Sgt. John G. Frye, Capt. A.G. Crowe, Sgt. Donnie R. Shuck, Master Sgt. Arthur E. Jackson and Sgt. 1st Class Daniel Frye.
75 years ago: Feb. 22, 1934
A number of property owners in the area formerly served by old Lorimier School favor construction of a new school on the site of the old one.
It is possible that rails of the Cape Girardeau-Brooks Junction, or Gulf, line of the Frisco may be taken up early this spring; the Interstate Commerce Commission yesterday gave Frisco the authority to abandon the 26-mile line.
100 years ago: Feb. 22, 1909
CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Fire breaks out in Chaffee between 1 and 2 a.m. and destroys six buildings, four business houses and two dwellings; the stores destroyed are Henry Ossman's general merchandising establishment; W. Guelhle, butcher and grocer, J.W. Mears, grocery, and Cliston & Graham's grocery; the dwellings of the Widow Mears and William McDaniel are also lost.
This being Washington's birthday, Cape Girardeau is decorated by flags and bunting; banks and other public institutions have a holiday.
