25 years ago: Feb. 2, 1986

In observance of Baptist Men's Day, Dr. Arthur Mallory, commissioner of education for Missouri, is guest speaker at First Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau in the morning; in the evening, the guest speaker is Stanley Riehn.

Cape Girardeau County Sheriff Dwight Thomas takes over the investigation of a traffic accident within the city limits of Cape Girardeau involving his chief of operations.

50 years ago: Feb. 2, 1961

Drizzle turns to sleet at noon hour, a forerunner of a predicted two to four inches of snow continuing into tonight.

Mississippi River shipping in the Cape Girardeau section is again halted, when a towboat pushing four barges goes aground just above the upper end of Windy Bar, 10 miles upstream; seven tows are immediately behind the stranded vessel, and two others, passing Cape Girardeau in the morning, aren't far away; in all from 35 to 40 barges are caught in the trap.

75 years ago: Feb. 2, 1936

Dr. H.H. McGinty, pastor of First Baptist Church, preaches the second of his series of sermons on "Home and Home Folks;" the subject is "Choosing a Wife."

Disregarding the inclement weather, those interested in boosting a Cape Girardeau Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees) and guests from Sikeston, Poplar Bluff, St. Louis and Cairo, Ill., gather at the Hotel Idan-Ha for a dinner attended by 136 people; E.E. Miller, president of the newly formed organization, presides and talks are made by nine men.

100 years ago: Feb. 2, 1911

F.L. Clendenen of St. Louis has been induced to come to Cape Girardeau to take charge of a class in dancing; he is expected to come here each Friday for a term of 10 weeks; those desiring instruction will meet him at the Masonic Hall, children in the afternoon and adults in the evening.

Ella Greer has rented a flat on Themis Street and has moved here from Chaffee, Mo., in order to place her children in the Cape Girardeau schools.
