50 years ago: Feb. 19, 1955
Construction is nearing the final stages on a suspension bridge between Grand Tower, Ill., and Wittenberg, Mo., that will carry the two 30-inch lines of the Texas-Illinois Natural Gas Pipeline Co. across the Mississippi River; cradles to carry the lines on the world's largest suspension bridge of its type are being put in place.
Formal dedication will be held Sunday afternoon for the Oak Ridge consolidated school district's new gymnasium-auditorium and classroom building; dedicatory addresses will be made by president W.W. Parker of State College and Rep. A.C. Magill of Cape Girardeau.

75 years ago: Feb. 19, 1930
James C. Walker, 12, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest W. Walker of Cape Girardeau, was fatally injured last night when he was run down by a taxicab on Harmony Street, near the Broadway intersection; he had been roller skating with several other children.
Petitions asking for more pay for the Cape Girardeau Police Department are being circulated in various sections of town by business men.
100 years ago: Feb. 19, 1905
MALDEN, Mo. -- This city was visited by another fire last night; about 6 p.m., the Ruggles Hotel was discovered to be ablaze and was destroyed; most of the furniture was saved, but in the excitement it was roughly handled and is practically of no use.
