Four candidates will be vying for the two seats on the Jackson Board of Education in the April 1 election; incumbents Dennis Sievers and John Lorberg will be opposed by Dr. D. Warren Salzman of Jackson and Beverly Ann Kasten of Pocahontas.

Michael Robert of Cape Girardeau was given a plaque yesterday recognizing him as Knight of the Year in Cape Girardeau by Knights of Columbus Council 1111.

50 years ago: Feb. 17, 1955

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- A special election to vote on a proposed $150,000 bond issue has been called for March 8; the funds would be used to build an annex to the Southside Grade School in Chaffee, to modernize the lighting systems of the present school buildings and to construct bleachers for the football field.

Cape Girardeau Mayor Narvol A. Randol, Commissioner J.W. McBride and city attorney Gerald B. Rowan are in Washington conferring with officials of the General Services Administration and the Post Office Department on the exchange of the Common Pleas Courthouse property and the post office.

75 years ago: Feb. 17, 1930

Two more candidates enter the race for city commissioner of Cape Girardeau; City Commissioner Martin J. Krueger is asking for reelection, and Joseph Baumgartner is also seeking a seat; this brings the total number of candidates to six, the others being Henry J. Brinkopf, Louis Wittmor, Phillip Steck and Commissioner A.P. Behrens.

A meteor of huge proportions causes an unusual atmospheric disturbance in Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas; spreading a great light over the sky.

100 years ago: Feb. 17, 1905

Operators of Stein & Lance Mill on Broadway are making plans to erect a monster grain elevator next to the mill; it is their intention to have the steel elevator completed by May; the elevator will be 40 feet high and will hold 50,000 bushels of wheat.

The new Star Barber Shop, which opened the first part of the week on Broadway, is upholding the promises made by its owner, T. Percy Mathews; he promised he would put in a first-class shop in all respects, and he has done so.
