Archbishop Metropolitan Pangratios of Old Kalendar Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Vasiloupolis (Queens, N.Y.) has announced establishment of Eastern Orthodox Apostolate in Cape Girardeau; it will provide chaplaincy services to Orthodox Christians in area hospitals, correctional facilities, Southeast Missouri State University and Southern Illinois University.

Bluff City Beer has announced plans to move its headquarters from Poplar Bluff to Cape Girardeau; firm has five distribution centers throughout Southeast Missouri, including new 15,300-square-foot warehouse on Siemers Drive in Cape West Business Park.

25 years ago: Feb. 16, 1977

Cape Girardeau A and P Store at 2121 William is among 21 of 35 St. Louis area stores which will be sold, confirms Robert T. Blade, Midwest regional vice president of company; store here, along with 19 in St. Louis and one at Festus, will be sold to "other food merchandisers."

Members of LaSalle II expedition, recreating journey made by famous Frenchmen 295 years ago, paddle down Mississippi River still partially clogged with ice and come ashore north of Missouri Dry Dock in late afternoon; 16 young people, five educators, playwright and Franciscan priest are making 3,300-mile trip from Montreal to New Orleans.

50 years ago: Feb. 16, 1952

Concluding week-long series, United Evangelistic Mission of 31 Methodist churches of Cape Girardeau district will hold meeting at church at Sikeston Sunday at 3 p.m.; final reports from participating churches will be heard, and evaluation of effort will be made.

Advance - Albert Painton, 80, founder of land and mercantile firm of Albert Painton, Inc., and founder of town of Painton, dies shortly after midnight at his home here; he is survived by his wife, former Ella I. Miller; two sons and four daughters.

75 years ago: Feb. 16, 1927

First concrete in construction of Cape Girardeau traffic bridge will be poured late this week, according to officials of U.G.I. Construction Co., which during past few days of favorable weather has been making excellent progress in bridge work.

Telephone service between Cape Girardeau and London, at about $30 per minute, will be possible beginning tomorrow; calls from here will be transmitted over usual land lines to St. Louis, thence to New York by direct wire, from there to Rocky Point, L.I., where message is broadcast to station at Wroughton, England, and transferred by land wire to London.
