The proposed construction of a new municipal swimming pool to replace the aging Capaha Park pool received the unanimous endorsement of the park board last night; a 12-member swimming pool committee had recommended replacing the Capaha pool.

Three men, including a former schoolmate of Southeast Missouri Bank president John Percy Huston IV, have been arrested and charged with plotting to kidnap the bank president; the scheme was thwarted and the trio arrested in Florida by FBI agents.

It is announced that occupancy of the new Central Junior High School at Caruthers Avenue and Thilenius Street has been postponed for at least a week; some of the equipment for the cafeteria has yet to arrive.

A 44-unit expansion of the Holiday Inn Motel at Interstate 55 and Gordonville Road is planned by the Drury Brothers, owners of the facility; construction will begin within several days and the annex will be in operation by May.

1939

Joseph F. Fuerth, 76, a member of a pioneer Cape Girardeau family and a lifelong resident of the community, dies at his home on the Bend Road; until he moved to his country home 20 years ago, Fuerth operated a foundry and machine shop on North Main Street, which was an outgrowth of his father's blacksmith shop.

At a joint meeting of the County Court and the Cape Girardeau City Council last night, it was decided that a building will be constructed in Cape Girardeau to house the Social Security staff and probably to serve other purposes serving the public generally.

1914

With the heaviest snow of the last two years on the ground, Cape Girardeans are finding the conditions good for sleighing; the snow began falling fitfully here Wednesday night, and continued nearly continuously Thursday; around midnight, it warmed up and turned to rain; yesterday's cold brought six more inches of snow covering the previous white blanket and ice.

The Woolworth system of 5- and 10-cent stores has leased the Houck Building at the corner of Main and Independence streets for a term of 15 years, with plans to put in a big store here in the spring.
