Alberta Gilpin of Jefferson City, Mo., is the guest speaker of the evening at First Baptist Church; the service commemorates the organization of Women's Missionary Union in Missouri 100 years ago.

Dr. Ronald Feuerhahn, professor of historical theology at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis and son of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau, is guest preacher at Trinity, as the congregation observes Transfiguration Sunday.

1963

Approximately 25 members of the Cape Girardeau Lions Club and their wives have pledged their eyes to the Eye Tissue Bank at the University of Missouri Medical Center; the action was taken in conjunction with the Missouri Lions Club's statewide campaign to interest people in pledging or willing their eyes to the eye bank.

A new supermarket to be operated by Walter G. Childs will be built at the Town Plaza shopping center; excavation work has begun for the new IGA Foodliner, to be built on Plaza Way between Independence and William streets.

1938

Cape Girardeau is among a number of cities in which a hunt is in progress for two dangerous, insane criminals, who escaped from the prison at Chester, Ill., on Saturday; the two made keys by hand to engineer their escape.

Ruby Walters, Common Pleas Court clerk, says she doesn't plan to seek re-election; at the same time, Martha Smude, deputy clerk, announces she will be a candidate for the Republican nomination for that office this year.

1913

Cairo, Ill., is in the throes of a water famine and is absolutely without fire protection, the result of an accident that destroyed the standpipe at the waterworks early in the morning; the huge standpipe, which had been leaning for some time, toppled over, flooding the waterworks plant, damaging the machinery, putting out the fire in the furnace and cutting off the city's water supply.

Capt. and Mrs. G.E. Alt are making plans to move from Cape Girardeau to Virginia; Mrs. Alt -- a social leader, a church worker and a woman who has taken part in all civic causes -- will be honored by the Wednesday Club at a luncheon Monday evening at Academic Hall.
