Three property owners in the vicinity of a proposed route for the extension of Silver Springs Road have requested the city proceed with the project; the Cape Girardeau County Association for Retarded Citizens Inc., West Cape Development Co. and Joe A. Burk would like Silver Springs Road extended between Themis and Independence streets, with the construction of a 40-foot-wide, paved street.

The Jackson Board of Education has renewed the contract of R-2 School District superintendent R.O. Hawkins; the coming year will be Hawkins' 34th year with the public school system and his 25th year as its superintendent.
The International Shoe Co. will close its Cape Girardeau No. 2 plant about mid-March, putting about 300 employees out of work; the move won't effect the operation of the No. 1 plant, which employs about 700 persons; the No. 2 plant, established in 1955 for the production of casual shoes, is in the north end of the factory building on North Main Street.
