The Rev. Larry G. Davis is the new pastor of First Assembly of God Church in Jackson, having begun his duties there Jan. 29; Davis previously was pastor at Blue Ridge Assembly of God Church in Kansas City, Mo., and served as associate pastor of Calvary Temple Assembly of God Church in Sikeston, Mo., 14 years.

A significant increase in the number of freshman applications for admission to Southeast Missouri State University this fall has prompted the school to urge high school seniors to apply as soon as possible; at the rate applications are coming in, the university can't guarantee beginning students admission after June 30.

1964

Dale Russell Williams, vocal music director at Central High School, collapsed and died last night as he was conducting his senior A Cappella Choir at Trinity Lutheran School; Williams, 37, was the father of five children.

Dennis Gibson of Cape Girardeau "Robin-Hoods" an arrow while shooting at the indoor range of the Bootheel Bowhunters Club; Gibson's second arrow splits another arrow already in the target center.

It is reported that a group of doctors headed by D.H. Hope, F.W. Hall, M.H. Shelby and A.J. Rasche, all now having offices on Broadway, has procured the old F.W. Pott residence at the corner of Themis and Pacific streets, and will have it remade into commodious, modern quarters for their professional needs.

Dies, John H. Job, 79, retired farmer and stockman, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Louis Frueh, 319 S. Ellis St.; Job, a native of Scott County, farmed most of his life on Highway 74, between Cape Girardeau and Dutchtown; he is survived by three daughters, three sons and a sister.

1914

Walter Black will soon have another new car in his passenger-carrying business between Cape Girardeau and other neighboring towns; it will be a six-passenger Hupmobile, purchased from the Southeast Missouri Motor Car Co.

A big boarding house is started at 20 S. Spanish St. for the men engaged on the levee work for the Frisco Railroad; evidently a lot of labor will be shipped in from other places to complete the huge task; contractor W.F. McMurray and his foreman, J.H. Titus, made the arrangements for the boarding house.
