25 years ago: Feb. 11, 1987

Show Me Center has been unanimously chosen as the name for the Cape Girardeau-Southeast Missouri State University multipurpose building by a special naming committee; it is expected the name will be confirmed by the City Council and the Board of Regents next week.

Cape Girardeau Central High's principal for the last dozen years, Raymond Pensel, won't continue in the post next year; instead, Pensel will serve as coordinator of federal projects; his replacement hasn't been named.

50 years ago: Feb. 11, 1962

A week-long observance of "Brotherhood--Race Relations" week begins at St. James A.M.E. Church, with the Rev. M.F. Emerson and the choir from St. John A.M.E. Church in Jackson providing the evening program; the week will conclude with the appearance next Sunday of Dr. G. Wayman Blakely, a delegate to the World Council of Churches in Oslo, Norway, and pastor of St. Paul A.M.E. Church in St. Louis.

Ten Boy Scouts receive the Ad Altare Dei cross from Bishop Charles H. Helmsing of the Springfield-Cape Girardeau Diocese during an afternoon ceremony at St. Mary's Cathedral; at the same time, 13 Cub Scouts are presented the Parvuli Dei Award.

75 years ago: Feb. 11, 1937

Fire of undetermined origin destroys the large frame Community Clubhouse in Fairground Park shortly before noon; nine patients in an emergency hospital set up there for refugees with communicable diseases are carried to safety; within 30 minutes, the building burns to the ground.

Plans for the fourth annual Easter sunrise service are approved by the Ministerial Alliance; however, the place hasn't yet been selected, as a suggestion has been made that the union service be held on the State College campus instead of at Cape Rock.

100 years ago: Feb. 11, 1912

Mr. and Mrs. Guy Miltenberger, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Macke, and Alma Hoffmeister of Jackson spend the day in Cape Girardeau with relatives.

The boys of the fire department are making plans for a masquerade ball; it will be held the evening of Feb. 20 at the West End Hall; no pains will be spared to make it a fine affair.
