Cape Girardeau apparently will have new site for Greyhound Bus Co. station; at meeting yesterday, city's Planning and Zoning Commission recommended city council approve special use permit to place bus station at convenience store at 305 N. Frederick.

Two local lawmakers vote on opposite sides over legislation that would extend state licensing to church-run child-care centers; divided Missouri House approves legislation, sending it to Senate; state Rep. Mary Kasten, R-Cape Girardeau, votes for measure, citing safety and health concerns.

25 years ago: Feb. 11, 1978

Gary L. Robbins of Jackson, public defender for 32nd Judicial Circuit of Cape Girardeau and Bollinger counties, filed Friday as Democratic candidate for Cape Girardeau County prosecuting attorney; Robbins became first candidate to file for office, which has been held since 1977 by Republican Bradshaw Smith, upon his appointment by former Gov. Christopher S. Bond.

Member of Jackson Jaycees and loan officer at Cape County Bank in Jackson is among 10 outstanding young Missouri Jaycees in Kansas City; Leonard Swan, 32, receives district service award for overall contributions to his profession and community.

50 years ago: Feb. 11, 1953

Jump from railroad trestle to avoid being struck by train resulted in head and back injuries for Robert H. Martin, 32, of Cape Girardeau yesterday; Martin was going fishing in Diversion Channel and was crossing Frisco Railroad trestle southwest of town; he was part of way across when he saw train approaching.

State Highway Department announces that bids will be received up to mid-morning Feb. 27 for number of construction projects in Division 10, including two supplementary route improvements in Cape Girardeau County; two are actually continuation of each other.

75 years ago: Feb. 11, 1928

Municipal races are beginning to heat up; Mayor James A. Barks announces his candidacy for re-election; he is completing his third full term as mayor of Cape Girardeau; Martin Krueger, former city councilman of Cape Girardeau, says he will be candidate for one of two commission jobs at March primary.

Isaac A. Smith, longtime Cape Girardeau and probably one of few in area who saw Abraham Lincoln, recalls circumstances under which he saw president; Smith, then lad of 15, was living in his native Cincinnati, when Lincoln was elected president in 1860; en route to Washington for inauguration, Lincoln passed through Cincinnati.
