25 years ago: Feb. 10, 1978

Former St. Louis man who is now dean of students Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa., will return to Missouri this spring to become dean of students at Southeast Missouri State University; Dr. Thomas J. Risch, who was born in St. Louis, will join university administrative staff about May 1.

Larry Payne has become fifth candidate to file for Cape Girardeau Board of Education; Payne, who has been services department manager at Procter and Gamble Paper Products for eight years, says he is concerned over number of high school graduates he has seen who aren't able to effectively communicate.

50 years ago: Feb. 10, 1953

Hobbs Methodist Church on Bend Road is engaged in all-out redecorating project of chapel interior, and yesterday when official board and members of chapel met, they approved plan to put new hardwood floor in church; plans for church include new pulpit being built by member; new piano that was gift to congregation; installation of new light fixtures; painting of interior, and conversion of coal furnace for use of oil.

The Rev. H.J. Strickert, pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church at Tilsit, tendered his resignation Sunday to his congregation; resignation is effective May 1; minister for Lutheran church for 38 years, Strickert served in Shady Bend, Kansas, before coming to Tilsit in 1936.

75 years ago: Feb. 10, 1928

Burglars broke into Central High School building last night, rifled vault in office of Superintendent J.A. Whiteford of $680 in cash and escaped without leaving evidence of how they entered vault; money represented receipts of basketball game last night between Central High and Fruitland and also included funds of different departments.

Roy Brissenden, former city commissioner, announces his candidacy for mayor of Cape Girardeau; verifying reports that he would seek mayor's office, Brissenden says he has been urged by many people from all sections of city to become candidate; he served as city commissioner for four years; he was elected in 1922 and re-elected in 1924.
